The Church of St Milburga

WHat's On at St Milburga's

About our church

The Church of St Milburga is the parish church for the village of Stoke St Milborough in South Shropshire. It stands in centre of the village of Stoke Saint Milborough, nestled between the Clee hills.  The village was known as Godstoke in Saxon times and is thought to have belonged to the Saxon abbey at Wenlock. The Abbey was founded in 680 AD by Saint Milburga,  daughter of Merewald of Mercia, who also gave her name to the village.

Open daily to visitors, St. Milburga’s offers a variety of traditional and modern Sunday services, led by both clergy and lay members. Activities such as bell ringing, choir, coffee mornings, talks and conservation work take place in the church and you can find details of these in the Calendar further down this page.

The address of the church is Church Lane, Stoke St Milborough, SY8 2EJ and the exact What3Words location of the church is:

The well of St Milburga has a fascinating history linked to the legend of the saint and you can visit it easily as a five-minute detour from the church.  This is the exact What3Words location of the well: https://w3w.co/perfumed.nimbly.rinse

You can also hear more about the history of the well and the legends associated with it on this episode of the BBC's Secret Shropshire, as told by Sue Cornah www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0l3kgsx

A Guide to Stoke St Milborough Parish Church by Peter Klein

The guide below was written by local historian Peter Klein in 1992. It contains many interesting details about the history of the church up to that time.
There have been a number of changes since 1992, so for a more up-to-date guide, see the following contribution by Sue Cornah...
